Railway transport for the National Day Golden Week officially commenced, running from September 27 to October 8, spanning 12 days. Railways nationwide are expected to serve a total of 190 million passengers during this period, with an average daily passenger count of approximately 15.83 million. The peak passenger flow is expected to exceed 20 million passengers on September 29.

According to officials from CR, this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays together extend for 8 days, resulting in a strong desire among holidaymakers to travel. Family visits and tourism activities are intertwined, leading to robust growth in railway passenger traffic. Analysis of ticket presales through the railway’s 12306 ticketing system, reveals that long-distance travel is dominant at the beginning and end of the holiday period, with short-distance travel dominating the middle period. Since the launch of holiday transportation ticket sales on September 13, the 12306 ticketing system has smoothly handled the large demand for tickets. The railway sector consistently adheres to the development philosophy centered on the people, deploying various strategies to increase transport capacity, enhance service quality, strengthen emergency support, and meet the holiday travel needs of passengers while ensuring the transportation of essential national goods.

Firstly, efforts will be made to enhance transport capacity. The national railway will adopt a high-capacity train operation schedule, further optimizing transportation organization. A total of over 11,500 passenger trains are planned to run daily, an increase of more than 1,850 trains compared to the normal schedule. On peak days, the number of trains scheduled to operate is expected to exceed 12,000, with a daily passenger seat capacity projected to grow by 18.5% compared to the same period in 2019. Potential transport capacity is fully explored through measures such as operating overnight high speed trains, adding 320 long-distance non-stop passenger trains on popular routes, using methods like multiple-unit train coupling, and adding carriages to normal-speed passenger trains to increase seating capacity. Trains heading towards Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou will generally run with full carriages or full train compositions. Each local railway department will timely and flexibly add temporary passenger trains within their respective regions to dynamically meet short-distance passenger travel demands. Efforts will also be made to ensure the smooth operation of transportation services for the Hangzhou Asian Games, providing support for the event’s successful operation.

Secondly, passenger service quality will be improved. Customer service personnel will be increased in key station ticketing windows during the holiday period. This includes enhancing passenger guidance and organization during peak hours at stations, and ensuring basic services such as air conditioning, water supply, and dining. Special attention will be given to key passenger groups such as the elderly, children, disabled individuals, and pregnant women. The railway will also strengthen information services through the 12306 system, utilizing services such as waiting-list ticket purchases, online seat selection, and online meal reservations. Coordination and connectivity will be emphasized with municipal transportation modes, including subways, buses, and taxis, continuously improving the passenger travel experience. Public interest slow trains will also operate to facilitate holiday travel for local residents.

Thirdly, comprehensive emergency support will be ensured. In response to sudden surges in passenger traffic, a certain number of spare passenger trains and crew members are reserved in various major railway hub regions throughout the country, ready for immediate deployment. Preparations for emergency scenarios, including severe weather, widespread delays, and equipment failures, have been made. Work plans have also been refined and practical drills are conducted to guarantee an effective response. This ensures the safe and smooth operation of the railway’s major corridors and minimizes the impact on transportation orders and passenger travel.

Lastly, the focus will be on enhancing the support for key commodities. Precise guarantees and priority transportation will be provided for key goods, including holiday goods, food, cotton, and fertilizers, to support the continuous improvement of economic operations and the holiday lives of the people. Key transportation routes such as the Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway, Tangshan-Baotou Railway, Watang-Rizhao Railway, Haolebaoji-Ji’an Railway, and Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway for north-south coal transport and west-east coal transport will be utilized effectively to ensure a stable coal supply for power plants nationwide. Transportation organization will be strengthened at major railway border crossings to ensure stable and smooth operations of the CRE trains, the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor trains, and international cargo trains on the China-Laos railway. The railway’s 95306 system and the CRE train portal website will be actively utilized to continuously improve cargo handling efficiency and service quality.

The railway sector informed passengers that from October 1 to 4, train tickets in various directions are relatively abundant. Passengers who have not secured tickets can choose to travel during off-peak times or use options such as waiting-list ticket purchases and transfer connections. Additionally, they are encouraged to stay informed about the latest information on additional train services in different regions and purchase tickets promptly. Passengers are advised to use official channels such as the railway’s 12306 website (including mobile apps) for online ticket purchases, as it is the official and sole online railway ticketing platform, and it does not charge any additional fees. This ensures the protection of passengers’ legitimate rights and personal information security. Given the high passenger flow during the National Day Golden Week, passengers are advised to plan their trips reasonably, allocate sufficient time for station entry and boarding, and take necessary health precautions during travel, contributing to collectively maintaining a pleasant travel experience.
