According to CR, on September 7, the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway, a collaborative project between China and Indonesia, commenced operations. The travel time between the two cities has been drastically reduced from 3.5 hours to just 40 minutes. Official ticket sales for commercial operations will begin in early October. This marks Indonesia’s entry into the era of high speed railways and represents a significant milestone in the joint efforts of China and Indonesia in the “Belt and Road” initiative.

According to the International Department of CR, the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway is not only Indonesia’s first high speed railway but also the first in Southeast Asia. It serves as a flagship project aligning the “Belt and Road” Initiative proposed by China with the “Global Maritime Fulcrum” concept put forth by Indonesia, with the entire line adopting Chinese technology and standards. The Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway, spanning 142.3 kilometers in total length, connects Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, with the renowned tourist city of Bandung. Operating at a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour, it starts from Jakarta city and passes through Bekasi City, Bekasi County, Karawang County, Purwakarta County, West Bandung County, Cimahi City, Bandung County, and Bandung City. The railway includes four stations: Halim Railway Station, Karawang Railway Station, Padalarang Railway Station, and Tegalluar Railway Station.

The official explained that following the commencement of operations for the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway, from September 7th to September 30th, there will be eight passenger trains scheduled daily, running between Halim Railway Station in Jakarta and Tegalluar Railway Station in Bandung according to the train schedule. Residents along the route can make reservations with the Kereta Cepat Indonesia–China (KCIC) for free trial rides. Starting from early October, official ticket sales will commence for commercial operations. At that time, the number of passenger trains operated will be determined based on market demand to meet the travel needs of the local population along the route.

The Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway’s train sets are adapted from China’s advanced Fuxing EMU train technology, with a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour. They are designed to accommodate Indonesia’s operating conditions and route requirements while integrating elements of Indonesian culture. These trains are equipped with state-of-the-art features, ensuring a safe and convenient travel experience. Each train set consists of eight cars, offering VIP, first-class, and second-class seating, with a total capacity of 601 passengers. The train sets can run in multiple formations and are equipped with facilities for passengers with disabilities, including accessible restrooms, braille signage, as well as amenities like vending machines, coffee makers, and microwaves, ensuring a comfortable travel experience for passengers.

The major stations along the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway boast distinctive features, presenting different landscapes for each station. These stations emphasize modern functionality while showcasing Indonesian culture, blending the natural beauty of West Java Island with local “weaving culture.” Advanced and well-equipped service facilities, along with intelligent customer service information systems, ensure seamless connections with light rail, public buses, taxis, and other municipal transportation, making travel on the high speed railway more convenient and efficient. Halim Railway Station in Jakarta, the capital, has now taken its place as Indonesia’s largest railway passenger station. With a sprawling building area spanning 26,000 square meters, it offers the capacity to comfortably host up to 2,500 passengers simultaneously. Padalarang Railway Station is the only station along the route that interconnects with existing normal-speed railways, facilitating smooth transfers between high speed and conventional rail services.

The geological environment along the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway is complex, posing significant challenges to the construction. Both Chinese and Indonesian participating companies have drawn upon China’s successful high speed railway construction experiences, emphasizing ecological preservation principles. They have conducted thorough surveys and designs while organizing construction efforts, with an emphasis on safety and quality control. The project has been executed with scientific precision, efficiency, and superior quality. The project team adopted a route that minimizes exposure to geological challenges such as landslides and volcanic activity. They have also implemented innovative designs, including bridges with enhanced seismic performance, ballastless track systems for smoother rides, and advanced train control systems with enhanced functionality. The project has been completed to the highest standards, featuring a total of 13 tunnels and 56 bridges.

During the construction, a substantial amount of cement and other raw materials were locally sourced in Indonesia, contributing to local economic development. The project created employment opportunities for the local community by recruiting Indonesian employees. A total of 51,000 job positions have been generated, with 45,000 Indonesian employees receiving training.

The official explained that prior to the commencement of operations for the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway, both Chinese and Indonesian authorities meticulously organized various units to conduct integrated testing and commissioning, inspections, and safety evaluations of all specialized equipment. This included extensive optimizing and fine-tuning for track conditions, overhead wire performance, train control systems, and communication signal systems, to ensure the line met all operational requirements. Additionally, rigorous selection, training, and qualification assessments were carried out for operational and maintenance personnel.

The official also explained that the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway will significantly reduce travel time between Jakarta and Bandung, greatly improving local transportation conditions, facilitating travel for residents along the route, and stimulating commercial development and tourism industry growth. It will inject momentum and provide new impetus to regional economic and social development. Moreover, it holds great significance for deepening practical cooperation between China and Indonesia and building a community of shared future between the two nations.
